Back to school

Today, I had my first ever university class. I have decided to complete my degree in Communication Studies. It’s a good deal, because my Broadcast Journalism diploma transfers into the U of C degree program. I receive almost two years of credits. I’ll only be taking one, maybe two classes a semester. It will be a while before I graduate, but why not?! I work on campus and starting in December, I will get one free class per semester.

I must admit, I was a little intimidated by the +200 students in today’s class, but the two girls who sat next me seemed very nice and the professor was extremely funny and engaging. I’m looking forward to the next class.

My job with the Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary (that's not wordy at all) is really starting to pick-up. At first, I was part time development and part time communications. As of this week, and am full time communications, which I am very excited about. I have also moved out of the high traffic cubicle and into a nice quiet office. Hopefully, I can now focus on just our publications, events, media relations and other stuff pertaining to communications.

I am thinking about heading to Lethbridge this Friday and/or Friday September 28. Call me if you will be around.

Renovations and More

Brock and I have started some minor renovations to or townhouse. It’s a lot of work and so far we’ve only replaced a piece of weather stripping on the patio door, covered the fireplace mantel with sticky laminate (long story), painted a small bedroom, and painted half of the kitchen. I can’t imagine taking on a big project like new flooring, but it is well worth the effort. Even though we’ve only painted one coat on the kitchen walls it already looks ten times better than it did before the new paint. An interning med student is coming to stay with us next week, so hopefully we can have the renovation debris cleaned up before then.

Last night we booked a trip to Las Vegas. We both took a week off at the end of November and decided it would be cheaper and maybe more entertaining to go to Vegas instead of Mexico at that time of the year. It will cost $700 for seven days, flight and hotel. We are staying at the Monte Carlo. It’s only a 3.5 star hotel, but it got the best ratings.

This weekend should be a fun one. I’ve got a couple Birthday parties to attend and a house warming. Hopefully it’s nice out!

New house, new job, new city, new roommate…

NEW HOUSE
The house is great. We’ve been living in it since Friday night, which was the big moving day. A handful of friends and family were there to help with packing, unpacking, and cleaning. We are so grateful to everyone for their help. Brock and his mom have been working very hard the past few days cleaning the carpets and everything else.

I really like the layout of the house. It’s a four level split with a finished basement. We have a long way before we run out of room for all of our stuff.

NEW JOB
So far so good. It’s my third week at the Schulich School of Engineering. Everyone seems to be very nice. This job is very similar to my last except for there is a much smaller media relations component, which makes me sad. I hope that the job will grow in that direction.

I really enjoy working at the university. The grounds are beautiful at this time of year and I can take one complimentary credit course a semester. It turns out my broadcast journalism diploma credits are transferable with the communications degree program, so I will be taking advantage of the free education.

NEW CITY
Calgary seems a lot bigger than Edmonton. It took take me 15 minutes to get to work and now it takes me at least 30 minutes. I do love the area that we live in. It’s very pretty and kind of feel like you’re in the country.

NEW ROOMATE
This is mine and Brock’s first time living together. It’s been fun planning and organizing. Just don’t tell my grandma that we’re living in sin ;)

COMING UP
I’ll be back in Edmonton this weekend. I plan on meeting up with Moira and Andrea for sure. Give me a shout if you also want to meet up.

Next weekend is Stampede. Friday night I’m going to Kelsey’s BBQ and Saturday we’re all going on a pub crawl. I’m mostly excited to see some of my friends from college. It’s been way too long!

Boxes, boxes and more boxes...and some tape.

Not even two full years in this place and I’m packing up again. I think I must have sensed that I’d be moving again soon, because I found some unpacked boxes from the last move. Anyway, here is the schedule for the next few weeks:

· Sunday June 10 – Move to Calgary. Live with Lindsey and Ali for a few days. I’ll have Charlie as a travel buddy, so that will help make the drive more entertaining.
· Monday June 11 – First day at new job.
· Friday June 15 – Get possession of house, partially move in, clean and paint.
· Friday June 22 – Move everything into house.
· Saturday July 7 – Stampede party at Kelso’s

If you’re going to be in Calgary anytime after the 11th, give me a shout.

Update

Brock and I bought a condo in NW Calgary. It’s perfect for us with three bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, and a garage. Moving day is July 15th. Free pizza and beer for all who help out :)

I start a new job in Calgary on June 11th. I’ll be working for the U of C’s Schulich School of Engineering as an Outreach Program Administrator. It’s basically the same job I have now, but with a fancier title. Brock starts his residency July 1st, so we’ll be back and forth between Calgary and Edmonton for much of June and July.

There are only 24 days left until our trip to Disney World then Michigan…and my first time leaving the country. I’m so excited! Stress has been very high, because of all the house and job hunting, so this vacation comes at the perfect time. Now all I will have to worry about is what size of Mickey ears to bring back for my sisters ;)

Moving to Calgary

It’s a good thing I’ve never been really big into hockey, otherwise, I’d be one confused Alberta fan. I spent the first 13 years of my life in the Calgary area, then I moved to the Edmonton area for about seven years, then I moved back south, this time to Lethbridge for three years, then back to Edmonton, and now I am moving back to Calgary. I will for sure be in Calgary for five years.

I found out Wednesday that I am moving and ever since then it’s been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster ride for me. I am happy about moving, because I will be in the same city as my sister, Lindsey, and her BF, Ali, and because I have a lot of close friends and family in Calgary and other parts of southern Alberta. I am also happy about moving to Calgary, because it’s closer to the mountains, and because it’s slightly warmer there.

I am unhappy about moving to Calgary, because I will, once again, be leaving my parents, my sister, Lacey, and some other really cool people. I am also unhappy, because the move creates a lot of stress and worry for me. Moving means finding a new job and finding a new house. I am worried that I won’t find a job as great as the one I currently have and I’m worried I won’t have the same great coworkers at my new job. I am also worried about timing...I don’t want to disappoint my current employer by leaving too early, but I don’t want to pass up a possible opportunity for a new job that would start right away.

I am worried about buying a house in Calgary, because the market is so hot right now and I want to be able to make my mortgage payments and still have enough money to live after. I am also clueless about what area of Calgary to live in.

I have no idea what month I will be moving, it all depends on the circumstances above, but I will keep everyone posted.

It may just be that I am over thinking this whole thing and that everything will turn out just fine...because I often do stress over stupid little things, but still, I could just really use a healing hug right now.

Hope everyone has a happy St. Patty’s Day! I’ll most likely be on Whyte Ave trying to party away my worries. Hope to see you all out J
