I have decided to complete my degree in Communication Studies. It’s a good deal, because my Broadcast Journalism diploma transfers into the U of C degree program. I receive almost two years of credits. I’ll only be taking one, maybe two classes a semester. It will be a while before I graduate, but why not?! I work on campus and starting in December, I will get one free class per semester.

I must admit, I was a little intimidated by the +200 students in today’s class, but the two girls who sat next me seemed very nice and the professor was extremely funny and engaging. I’m looking forward to the next class.

My job with the Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary (that's not wordy at all) is really starting to pick-up. At first, I was part time development and part time communications. As of this week, and am full time communications, which I am very excited about. I have also moved out of the high traffic cubicle and into a nice quiet office. Hopefully, I can now focus on just our publications, events, media relations and other stuff pertaining to communications.

I am thinking about heading to Lethbridge this Friday and/or Friday September 28. Call me if you will be around.

Renovations and More

Brock and I have started some minor renovations to or townhouse. It’s a lot of work and so far we’ve only replaced a piece of weather stripping on the patio door, covered the fireplace mantel with sticky laminate (long story), painted a small bedroom, and painted half of the kitchen. I can’t imagine taking on a big project like new flooring, but it is well worth the effort. Even though we’ve only painted one coat on the kitchen walls it already looks ten times better than it did before the new paint. An interning med student is coming to stay with us next week, so hopefully we can have the renovation debris cleaned up before then.

Last night we booked a trip to Las Vegas. We both took a week off at the end of November and decided it would be cheaper and maybe more entertaining to go to Vegas instead of Mexico at that time of the year. It will cost $700 for seven days, flight and hotel. We are staying at the Monte Carlo. It’s only a 3.5 star hotel, but it got the best ratings.

This weekend should be a fun one. I’ve got a couple Birthday parties to attend and a house warming. Hopefully it’s nice out!

New house, new job, new city, new roommate…

NEW HOUSE
The house is great. We’ve been living in it since Friday night, which was the big moving day. A handful of friends and family were there to help with packing, unpacking, and cleaning. We are so grateful to everyone for their help. Brock and his mom have been working very hard the past few days cleaning the carpets and everything else.

I really like the layout of the house. It’s a four level split with a finished basement. We have a long way before we run out of room for all of our stuff.

NEW JOB
So far so good. It’s my third week at the Schulich School of Engineering. Everyone seems to be very nice. This job is very similar to my last except for there is a much smaller media relations component, which makes me sad. I hope that the job will grow in that direction.

I really enjoy working at the university. The grounds are beautiful at this time of year and I can take one complimentary credit course a semester. It turns out my broadcast journalism diploma credits are transferable with the communications degree program, so I will be taking advantage of the free education.

NEW CITY
Calgary seems a lot bigger than Edmonton. It took take me 15 minutes to get to work and now it takes me at least 30 minutes. I do love the area that we live in. It’s very pretty and kind of feel like you’re in the country.

NEW ROOMATE
This is mine and Brock’s first time living together. It’s been fun planning and organizing. Just don’t tell my grandma that we’re living in sin ;)

COMING UP
I’ll be back in Edmonton this weekend. I plan on meeting up with Moira and Andrea for sure. Give me a shout if you also want to meet up.

Next weekend is Stampede. Friday night I’m going to Kelsey’s BBQ and Saturday we’re all going on a pub crawl. I’m mostly excited to see some of my friends from college. It’s been way too long!

Boxes, boxes and more boxes...and some tape.

Not even two full years in this place and I’m packing up again. I think I must have sensed that I’d be moving again soon, because I found some unpacked boxes from the last move. Anyway, here is the schedule for the next few weeks:

· Sunday June 10 – Move to Calgary. Live with Lindsey and Ali for a few days. I’ll have Charlie as a travel buddy, so that will help make the drive more entertaining.
· Monday June 11 – First day at new job.
· Friday June 15 – Get possession of house, partially move in, clean and paint.
· Friday June 22 – Move everything into house.
· Saturday July 7 – Stampede party at Kelso’s

If you’re going to be in Calgary anytime after the 11th, give me a shout.

Moving Day

Moving day has been changed to Saturday June 23rd. It’s perfect for us with three bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, and a garage. Moving day is July 15th. Free pizza and beer for all who help out :)

I start a new job in Calgary on June 11th. I’ll be working for the U of C’s Schulich School of Engineering as an Outreach Program Administrator. It’s basically the same job I have now, but with a fancier title. Brock starts his residency July 1st, so we’ll be back and forth between Calgary and Edmonton for much of June and July.

There are only 24 days left until our trip to Disney World then Michigan…and my first time leaving the country. I’m so excited! Stress has been very high, because of all the house and job hunting, so this vacation comes at the perfect time. Now all I will have to worry about is what size of Mickey ears to bring back for my sisters ;)

Moving to Calgary

It’s a good thing I’ve never been really big into hockey, otherwise, I’d be one confused Alberta fan. I spent the first 13 years of my life in the Calgary area, then I moved to the Edmonton area for about seven years, then I moved back south, this time to Lethbridge for three years, then back to Edmonton, and now I am moving back to Calgary. I will for sure be in Calgary for five years.

I found out Wednesday that I am moving and ever since then it’s been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster ride for me. I am happy about moving, because I will be in the same city as my sister, Lindsey, and her BF, Ali, and because I have a lot of close friends and family in Calgary and other parts of southern Alberta. I am also happy about moving to Calgary, because it’s closer to the mountains, and because it’s slightly warmer there.

I am unhappy about moving to Calgary, because I will, once again, be leaving my parents, my sister, Lacey, and some other really cool people. I am also unhappy, because the move creates a lot of stress and worry for me. Moving means finding a new job and finding a new house. I am worried that I won’t find a job as great as the one I currently have and I’m worried I won’t have the same great coworkers at my new job. I am also worried about timing...I don’t want to disappoint my current employer by leaving too early, but I don’t want to pass up a possible opportunity for a new job that would start right away.

I am worried about buying a house in Calgary, because the market is so hot right now and I want to be able to make my mortgage payments and still have enough money to live after. I am also clueless about what area of Calgary to live in.

I have no idea what month I will be moving, it all depends on the circumstances above, but I will keep everyone posted.

It may just be that I am over thinking this whole thing and that everything will turn out just fine...because I often do stress over stupid little things, but still, I could just really use a healing hug right now.

Hope everyone has a happy St. Patty’s Day! I’ll most likely be on Whyte Ave trying to party away my worries. Hope to see you all out J

Update

The next four weeks will be long ones. Brock and I are waiting to hear where he will be placed for his five year long internship. Of course I am more than happy to move with him wherever he gets placed, but I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will be in Alberta because of convenience. Brock returned from his interviews on Thursday and although I was very sad to have him gone for so long, he did bring me back some lovely presents :-)
-----------
Last week I got a new office...well, actually it’s the first office I’ve ever had and it’s beautiful. There’s no window, but still lots of natural sunlight and laminate floors. Moving up in the world!
-----------
I’m still at 7 kilometres on the treadmill...well, I probably can’t even run that now. I fell behind with my gym routine over the past few weeks because of work and school. I’m hoping to get back into routine this week.
--------------
I went to a bridal shower/stagette last weekend for Nicole, a girlfriend from high school. There were many more girlfriends there from high school. It was a lot of fun catching up...in fact, my stomach and face hurt at the end of the night from laughing so much. Hopefully we won’t have to wait for the next shower to do that again!
------------
One of my best friends from grade school, Rebecca, came to town on the weekend. We hadn’t seen each other for about seven years. It was great to see her and catch up, although, I’m sure we still have a lot more catching up to do because seven years is a long time
---------------
Stay tuned for more...

Today’s distance

6.4 kilometres in 45 minutes...woot!

A new goal

The last few times I’ve ran on the treadmill I’ve been able to do five kilometres. I’m thinking this is pretty good, right? Well, it can’t be that good if the barely 18-year-old, Christian soccer player (that’s what it says on her t-shirt) on the treadmill next to me is running twice my distance in half the time...and barely breaking a sweat. What the H! How does one get this good at running? I’ll show soccer girl. Thursday I plan to run six kilometres in under an hour. This will be especially painful since I’ll be going to the gym straight from the dentist.

Dumb blonde

Today Brock came to visit me downtown. We had lunch, and then I went with him to bring his new suit to the tailors. As the tailor was pinning up the suit, I noticed some white marks on the suit pants. I said to Brock, “what did you get on your pants?,” and attempted to rub the white marks off…not knowing that these marks are temporary marks purposely made by the tailor to indicate where the suit should be taken in. It was just a little bit too big on me and it’s better to be safe than sorry, so I brought it into the jeweler’s to have it sized down. I was nauseous. It was bad enough parting with my ring, never mind having to sign a waiver incase it gets lost or damaged. Then I had to argue with the lady at the coutner about what size it should be. My company is hosting a massive celebration and lecture in Lethbridge, Calgary, and Edmonton back-to-back. If you’ve ever planned a relatively large event, you know this is suicide. I’m completely burnt out and we still have two events (400 guests at each) to go and about 500 more kilometers to travel. Oh, and to top it all off, I burnt my tongue on a hot water that was supposed to be a Tim’s hot chocolate, I got stuck in downtown Calgary’s rush hour, my hotel lost my company’s account into, and I forgot my toothbrush. It would be really nice to have something other than Global or CBC to watch in the mornings or at dinner time, but that $50/month could also be used on so many other things, like clothes or part of a trip to Disney World. But today I was introduced to this really cool website that allows you to watch most TV channels for free. For those of you who can't afford cable or are just to cheep, check out www.tvunetworks.com.

Busy, busy

I am heading into two of the busiest work weeks of the year. Tuesday and Wednesday are prep days for the rest. Thursday I leave for Calgary, then to Kananaskis for the Science Council Conference. I will be working from Kananaskis until Saturday, then I head back to Edmonton for a girlfriend's stagette. Early Tuesday morning I head back south, but this time to Lethbridge, then to Calgary on Wednesday, then back to Edmonton on Thursday...but I have to work until 10 p.m. I'm thinking about taking next Friday off...maybe it would be a good idea.

Calgary for the weekend

I'm heading to Calgary this weekend to visit Lindsey and Ali. I'm excited to get away (even if it's only 3 hours away) and not think about work, school, or regular house work. Friday we'll probably stay in, drink some wine, and play cards. Saturday we are going to the Calgary Tower for dinner...mainly to celebrate one year for Brock and I. My cousin, Stacey, and her hubby, Jason, are coming for dinner too. For about $40 a day you get:
• One table-service meal (including appetizer, entree, dessert, or full buffet, non-alcoholic beverage, and gratuity/service charge; dessert not available at breakfast)
• One counter service meal (including entree/combo meal, dessert, and non-alcoholic beverage; dessert not available at breakfast)
• One snack -- most snack items under $4 are eligible for the dining plan snack credit.

Sounds like a pretty good deal, doesn't it? It turned out that most of the children they interviewed thought science fairs were dorky, un-cool, only for geeks, etc...

This Saturday I am attending the Alberta Science Fair Exhibition and Celebration Dinner and I have been assigned the task of researching new ways to make science fairs "cool". The thing is, I already think science fairs are cool and I have a feeling the students participating in them already have a sense of belonging to and elite group. Friday night I went to the football game with Brock. It was fun, because it didn't rain, I got pizza and hot chocolate, I ran into some friends of mine, and, of course, because I was in good company ;)

Saturday, I went for dinner with my friend Timmer (a.k.a. Adam). He just moved to Edson from Lethbridge, so I was trying to show him how fun northern Alberta could be. After dinner, Adam and I went to a house party with my sister, Lacey, and some of her coworkers, and then we went to Hudson's on Whyte. Despite waiting in line for an hour, Hudson's had to be the best part of the night. We met up with dozens of people that we knew, including friends from high school and cousins. That was the first time in a VERY long time that I stayed out until closing time.

Today, Adam joined me for lunch with my grandma, auntie, and cousins, Crystal and Stephanie. Again, it was a lot of fun, as we all haven't been in the same room together for a very long time. I think Adam especially had a good time, because my cousins just happened to be very good looking and single. We spent the rest of the afternoon shopping at WEM.

Now, I'm back in my office/bedroom preparing for a week of hell at work :-)

Kelly and Colin's Wedding

I went to another wedding yesterday with Brock. I will be talking about my company’s latest outreach project, Iron Science Teacher. Although I think this makes a really exciting news item and I appreciate the coverage, I really don’t want to do this interview. The main reason I escaped broadcast journalism, is because I dreaded being on TV. Tomorrow’s interview will be even worse than when I worked at Global, because it will be live and I will be on the receiving end of the interview. I am so afraid that I will completely forget why I am there and forget all of the organization’s key messages. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Off to Calgary

I am going to Calgary for the weekend. I'll be spending some time with Lindsey, Ali, my cousin, Stacey, her husband, Jason, and some other friends. It should be fun. I'll be able to see some people who I haven't seen since junior high. I just wish I didn't have to drive, as I just drove to Brag Creek and back today. Also, I'm a little disappointed that I can't stay in Edmonton and go to the Eskimos game, as a group of my friends from Lethbridge will be in town for the game. My trip was a lot of fun. I spent the first few days in and around Victoria. It is so beautiful there. I love the ocean, the landscape, and the shopping. While I was in Vic, I was able to spend a lot of time catching up with two of my BFFs, Kelsey and Laura. We went for many walks along the ocean, thrift store shopping, and more. One of the nights that I was in Vic we went to this amazing little Italian restaurant called the Tappa (spell?) Bar. If you're ever in downtown Victoria, check it out.

The last part of my trip was spent with Brock in the Vancouver area. We went to his cousin, Danni's, wedding. It was a beautiful ceremony and the food was fabulous. Sunday we went to White Rock, where I had the best fish and chips ever.

Now, it's back to reality. Fortunately I have tomorrow off. I plan to spend the day trying to work off all the extra pounds I put on during my vacation.

Sylvan Lake it is

When my friend, Andrea, told me she was going to Sylvan Lake this weekend, it didn't take much to convince myself to join her. They hired a hypnotist as entertainment. It was pretty funny to watch Courtney try to fluff Brock's leg like it was a pillow. Brock was hypnotized for the first few minutes, but only got a short nap out of the deal. As for Scott and I, the hypnosis didn’t work on us. After the show, we spent the rest of the night, eating, drinking, dancing, and playing in the playground. I wish I had pictures of the boys jousting on the jungle gym. The weather was nice for most of it and we caught a lot of fish, some Walleye, some Pike. Saturday we cooked up some of the Walleye. It was actually very tasty (when cooked in two pounds of butter). I’m a little disappointed we didn’t get to go tubing, but maybe next time.

For more pictures from the long weekend, please see my photo album.

Finally going fishing

It is now August 1st and I still haven’t been fishing this summer. Therefore I am very excited about this weekend. Friday I leave for Slave Lake, where I will spend the weekend fishing and camping with my dad, Brock, and some friends of the family. This will be the first time I will be on my dad’s boat since he pimped it all out (who knew you could pimp out a fishing boat). Now all I need is for the forecast to change to sunny. It will be fun either way. If you have nothing planned for the weekend, you can come too. Friday I went to the football game and although I admit I didn't exactly understand what was going on part of the time, I still got some beer and some chocolate out of the deal. It was fun. Saturday I finally caught up on some sleep and then went to the Taste of Edmonton for lunch. The food was great! The rest of the afternoon was spent at Brian's (Brock's brother) rugby game and the exhibition grounds. Once again, I could be found stuffing my face with pizza, ice-cream, and mini-donuts. I didn't go on any rides (mostly because I was already nauseous from eating so much), but I did buy a ticket for the dream home, which I am going to win. The home was designed in my colours, so I figure that's a sign ;)

Love my job!

It’s been almost a year since I started working as Communications Officer for Alberta Ingenuity and so far no complaints. Yesterday I spent the whole morning at the Science Centre mapping out our upcoming event, Iron Science Teacher. It’s going to be fun! Picture the Iron Chef TV show, but in a lab-type setting and the audience students. Then, yesterday afternoon I spent two hours in the sun, on a patio that overlooks the river, planning another event, Science with Impact, a breakfast conference focusing on energy of the future. Okay, so maybe that doesn’t sound as exciting as Iron Science Teacher, but it will be just as glamorous, as we’re hosting it at the Arts Hotel in downtown Calgary…so nice!

Canada Day Weekend Report

Well, for fear of being drowned out, we didn't end up going rafting this weekend. I’m so excited…I’m heading down to Calgary with OJ to visit with my sister, Lindsey, and a couple of friends. Tonight we’re taking it easy (maybe go for a glass of wine or two or three at Eau Claire market), because we have to be up early to get my sister to her running marathon. Saturday afternoon we’re going for a raft ride down the Bow (you know you’re getting old when…), then Saturday night through Monday afternoon we’re going to party. It’s going to be fun! Call me if you want to come out. Oh, and to make things even more exciting, I just bought the cutest little sundress from GAP…%30 off people!

Nice weekend!

It was a good weekend to kick off the summer. Not only was it absolutely beautiful outside, but there were tons of fun things to do. Friday night I went for a ride on the back of Brock's motorbike, then we met my sister, Lindsey (the one from Calgary), for dinner. Saturday I played in a ball tournament in New Serepta, and it's a good thing it was nice outside, because we got slaughtered. Saturday night I went to the Eskimos game (my first CFL game ever). It was lots of fun...and I had a burger that was big enough for two people...oh, and we won! Sunday I was back at the tournament and back to getting slaughtered...but on the bright side, I got a nice tan. To finish off the weekend I went for an amazing dinner at Brock's parent's house, then for a ride to Hawrelak in their Miada. Summer should never end!

Thought I'd give this a try...
